South Whitley Abandoned Service Station Black and White Architectural Photography
Twin Wooden Garage Doors Beside Broken Shopfront Windows
Two pale garage doors occupy the left half of this abandoned service station in South Whitley, Indiana. Beside them, a smaller entrance and broken windows sit beneath a broad faded signboard. I photographed the building in 2007 while passing through the town. Its low frontage and weathered materials made a compelling roadside subject, with a clear arrangement of openings across an otherwise simple wall.
The garage doors are made from upright boards, their worn surfaces carrying streaks and small dark marks. One has narrow openings across its lower half, adding a different pattern within the larger rectangle. I like how the paired doors give the building a steady rhythm, while the smaller frontage on the right changes the scale of the details. The pale masonry around them is unevenly stained and chipped.
Broken panes and loose coverings create darker, irregular shapes in the right windows. Above, the long signboard extends beyond the lower wall, supported near its outer edge by a slender upright. Grass and other growth gather along the base of the building, softening its straight boundary with the ground.
Trees frame the station beneath a grey sky, and a strip of roadway crosses the foreground. Black and white ties those different surfaces together while allowing the worn wood and masonry to remain distinct. As a print, the photograph offers an understated view of small town American architecture, suited to an interest in old garages, abandoned businesses and the roadside places of Indiana.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
