Route 66 Sign Pontiac Illinois | Wall Art
Iconic Route 66 Landmark Captured in Urban Americana
This moment felt like Route 66 itself was trying to talk back. I found myself standing in Pontiac, Illinois—one of those small towns that still hold onto the heartbeat of America’s most iconic highway. The mural? Massive. Painted across a brick wall like a billboard for memory. The Wishing Well Motel sign off to the side? Perfectly aged, like it never left the 1960s. But it was the puddle that sealed it—the unexpected reflection turning the whole thing into a mirror of Americana.
This is what I love about the road. You don’t plan shots like this. You wander, you linger, you wait for the rain to stop and the clouds to crack open. I didn’t expect the reflection to be that clear or that symmetrical, but when I saw it, I knew I had something. This wasn’t just another roadside photo—this was Route 66 talking back to itself, like it was remembering who it used to be.
The black-and-white treatment felt right. Not because it’s “vintage”—but because it focuses your eye. You notice the textures: the worn asphalt, the faded brick, the crack in the mural paint, the motel letters just slightly tilted. All those little imperfections are what make it sing. This isn’t a polished postcard—it’s a lived-in stretch of American mythology.
If you’ve ever driven Route 66—or even dreamed about it—you know what I mean. It’s not just a road, it’s a state of mind. And towns like Pontiac keep that spirit alive with murals, neon, and good old stubbornness. This fine art print captures that feeling. It’s nostalgia without being kitsch, history without a lecture.
I’ve travelled the length of Route 66 with my camera, always chasing the unexpected—the signs, the silence, the way places echo long after people leave. This piece is one of my favourites from the journey. It tells its own story and invites you into it.
If this speaks to you, take a detour through my Route 66 Photography Collection and explore more in the Americana Photography Collection. These images are time capsules—honest, lived-in, and full of character.
