Pontiac Garage Mural Photograph | Route 66 in Black and White
Painted Mechanics and a Classic Car Fill the Garage
At first glance, this garage in Pontiac, Illinois seems to hold a car up on stands, with a mechanic working beneath it. Look again and the whole scene is painted across the door. I photographed this Route 66 mural in black and white because I liked how convincingly its drawn figures and objects sit within the real brick facade.
The rear of the painted Pontiac takes the central position. Stacked tyres, tools and the figure beneath the bumper complete the workshop scene, while another painted person stands in the doorway to the left. A seated figure appears at the right edge. I enjoy the small shift in perception as those apparently separate spaces resolve into a mural on the building.
The surroundings give it a firm structure. Glass blocks form a long band overhead, and vertical U.S. Tires signs bracket the garage opening. The circular Deep-Rock sign adds a different shape near the upper left. These bold pieces of lettering tie the painted workshop to the automotive character that drew me along Route 66 in the first place.
I kept the photograph frontal, including the pavement and small marks on the ground. That makes the building feel encountered on a walk rather than isolated from its setting. For a room devoted to cars, road travel or Americana, it offers plenty to explore without relying on colour. The lasting pleasure for me is the mural’s play between a flat wall and the busy garage it asks us to imagine.
