Route 66 Streetcar Diner and Riviera Sign Monochrome Photography

A Tall Restaurant Sign Above the Small Glass-Fronted Diner

The Riviera Restaurant sign rises well above the small diner beneath it. At Gardner, Illinois, this Route 66 scene brings together a narrow vertical sign and a low, glass-fronted structure associated with Bob and Peggy Kraft. I photographed the view in monochrome, giving the clouded sky and the building’s fine framework a common range of tones.

The scale difference is what makes the composition work. The sign occupies the upper part of the frame, with its angled lettering and illustrated figure clearly visible. Below, the diner’s roof projects over a row of windows supported by thin braces. I kept the whole arrangement in view so the sign and building would remain connected.

Trees gather behind the structure, softening its outline without hiding it. Near the ground, the concrete surround and grass provide simpler surfaces after the busier window details. The darker panes and pale walls give the diner its shape, while the metal signpost supplies one strong line running through the picture.

This is a photograph of a preserved roadside place rather than an imagined scene of diners arriving for a meal. The building’s streetcar origins and familiar restaurant sign give it a particular identity along Route 66. I wanted to show that identity through the visible forms: a small structure, a much taller announcement above it, and the everyday grounds around both. The monochrome treatment keeps the image focused on those relationships and the details of the façade.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
