Red Neon Letters Against a Buenos Aires Night
A small red neon sign stopped me during a late evening walk in Buenos Aires. I was exploring an older commercial district when I noticed the word OPEN glowing low in a storefront doorway. In this colour photograph, the letters sit beneath a deep blue panel, with warm light reaching out from the interior beside them. The surrounding darkness gives that ordinary invitation an unexpectedly strong presence.
I photographed the storefront from the sidewalk, keeping the sign and its immediate surroundings close together. The thin tubes trace each letter inside a rectangular case, and the wiring remains visible along its lower edge. At the left, curved chair legs stand against an amber glow. Below the doorway, a strip of pavement catches the red light. These small differences in illumination were what held my attention: the sign burns brightly, the interior feels warmer, and the blue surface above stays subdued. Nothing needed to be added to make the colours speak to one another.
I like finding photographs in places that are easy to pass without a second look. Here, a familiar shop sign becomes a study of night colour, simple lettering and the boundary between a street and an interior. It brings a concentrated red accent to a room while retaining the details of the storefront I encountered. The photograph keeps that brief pause in my walk, when a few glowing letters were enough to draw me closer.
