Abandoned Nevada Mineral Hot Springs Building Black and White Architectural Photography
Faded Lettering and Graffiti Beneath a Wide Desert Sky
I found this mineral hot springs building south of Jackpot, Nevada, while looking for late day light in 2022. The low sun brought the pale block walls and faded “Mineral Hot Springs” lettering into clear view. Its simple shape still had a strong presence among the surrounding shrubs, with a bare metal sign frame rising above the roof. The photograph grew from that meeting of an ordinary roadside building and its open desert setting.
A corrugated awning runs across much of the frontage, casting a narrow band of shadow beneath it. Small windows and a central doorway interrupt the wall, while graffiti adds larger, irregular lines near the left side. I like how these details break up the building’s otherwise plain rectangular form. The roof steps upward near the centre, giving the lettering its own raised strip against the sky. Low vegetation gathers along the base and around the worn approach, adding another texture below the masonry.
Beyond the right edge, a rugged hill rises behind the open land. The sky occupies a broad part of the frame, with small clouds scattered above the building. Black and white brings the wall, awning, shrubs and distant slope into distinct tonal layers, keeping the architecture as the focus. I wanted to record the structure’s continuing physical presence within that landscape. As a print, it offers a restrained desert roadside subject for someone drawn to abandoned buildings, faded signs and the quieter places of Nevada.
