Old Havana Cannon Shadows Black and White Photography
Wooden Carriages and Long Shadows Repeat Across the Paving
Early light stretched the cannon shadows across the paving at the Castillo de la Real Fuerza in Old Havana, Cuba. I was drawn first to their repetition: raised barrels, heavy wooden carriages and dark shapes reaching across the ground. This black and white photograph follows that row as it becomes smaller toward the far side of the frame.
The nearest cannon has enough space around it to show the carriage clearly. Its small wheels, iron fittings and grainy wood sit beneath the much smoother barrel. Farther back, the same arrangement repeats at different scales. I like how the perspective turns separate objects into a connected rhythm without making them identical.
The shadows add a second row to the composition. They extend over the uneven paving, carrying the shape of each barrel beyond the cannon itself. Behind them, an iron fence and stone pillars give the scene another set of repeated lines. The buildings and foliage on the other side stay visible, keeping this formal arrangement within the surrounding Havana streetscape.
I chose monochrome to concentrate on weight, texture and the direction of the light. The pale ground opens up around the darker carriages, while the fence forms a fine vertical pattern behind them. For me, the photograph is strongest where those elements meet: solid objects, delicate ironwork and shadows that change their shapes across the stones.
