Winter Sunlight Moves Across Snow Among the Birch Trunks
Blue shadows curl across the snow in this winter photograph from Haliburton, Ontario. Slender birch trunks rise through the woodland, some carrying bright strips of snow along their bark. I was drawn to the colour in a scene that could easily seem almost white at first: the cool shade, warmer tree surfaces and blue sky between the branches.
The foreground snow forms gentle mounds, with sunlight revealing their smooth edges. Small twigs emerge here and there, but the larger pattern belongs to the shadows cast by the trees. Further back, the trunks gather more closely and the light becomes broken into smaller patches. I like how the rounded surface below and the fine lines above give the photograph two different textures to explore. The snow feels soft, while the woodland remains detailed and varied.
I made this image in 2019, close to the forests that are such a familiar part of my life in Haliburton. Looking at it brings me back to the simple pleasure of noticing how sunlight changes a winter scene. As a nature print, it can add a fresh, quiet presence to a cottage, bedroom or living room. It may appeal to someone who loves Ontario woodland, birch trees or the pale colours of a snowy day. For me, it is the small shifts between blue shade and bright snow that make this particular view worth returning to.
