Graffiti Echoes on Sagrada Familia Walls - A Photo Print by Dan Kosmayer

Upon the ancient walls of the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, a canvas unfurls, bearing the marks of contemporary artists - their graffiti, a vivid proclamation of the present against the past. As the architect behind the lens, I captured this juxtaposition, this dialogue between epochs, etched upon the old block walls of this iconic cathedral.

The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, an unfinished wonder of the world, stands as a testament to the architectural genius of Antoni Gaudí. This towering skyscraper, the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world, resides in the heart of Barcelona, Spain, silently narrating stories of epochs gone by. Its construction began in 1882 and and saw the transformative touch of Gaudí, who brilliantly fused Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms into a unique architectural expression. Even though Gaudí devoted his entire life to this masterpiece, at the time of his departure in 1926, the Basilica was less than a quarter completed.

Fast forward to today, the graffiti on its old walls speak volumes of the city's vibrant street art culture. Ever since the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona has emerged as a center of fashion, design, art, and creativity, attracting graffiti artists from around the globe. Yet, the city's stance on graffiti has been fraught with tension. Graffiti, once synonymous with vandalism, was banned in 2006, leading to a "clean up" project. Many artists, however, continue to paint in the face of restrictions, their indomitable spirit evident in the graffiti that adorns the city's public spaces, including our beloved basilica.
