Soft Snowdrifts Between Closely Spaced Woodland Trunks
Long shadows cross the snow between closely spaced trees in Haliburton Forest. The ground rolls into soft drifts, while the trunks rise through the view in an uneven but persistent pattern. This black and white winter photograph brings the eye down into the woods, where light reveals as much shape in the snow as in the trees themselves.
I like the foreground most of all. Its smooth mounds catch a gentle brightness, interrupted by darker bands that curve with the surface. Those shadows make the snow feel dimensional rather than flat. Small branches cross the lower part of the image, adding fine lines without disturbing the larger rhythm of the drifts.
Farther in, the forest becomes denser. Pale bark and darker markings keep individual trunks visible, while the spaces between them draw the eye deeper into the scene. The photograph has no broad sky or distant landmark to distract from that close woodland experience. Its detail stays within the repeated trees and the changing surface under them.
Photographed in 2019, this Ontario winter scene offers a quiet study of light on familiar natural forms. Monochrome lets the snow’s gentle curves work alongside the straighter trunks without competing colour. It is a piece for someone who enjoys forest photography or understated winter landscapes. I return to the way the shadows travel over each drift, making a simple snowy floor feel full of movement.
