Dark Shadow Lines Across a Perforated Façade and Glass Railing
Dark vertical shadows cross a finely perforated façade in this black and white architectural photograph from Croatia. A railing extends across the foreground, meeting the dense pattern at a different angle. I was drawn to the way direct light transformed the building’s surfaces into a composition of repeated openings, broad shadows, and quieter grey panels.
At the left, the perforations are clearly separated, creating small highlights within a close grid. As the surface recedes, that pattern becomes finer and less distinct. Wider shadow lines move through it and continue onto the lower panels. The railing crosses near the middle, with a transparent section beneath its dark top edge. At the right, a comparatively plain wall leaves an area of softer tone beside the more detailed surface.
I photographed this view in 2020 while looking for the smaller architectural scenes that emerge during travel. Here, the direction of the light mattered as much as the structure itself. I kept the frame close, allowing the wall and railing to establish their relationship without including the whole building. Monochrome brings the strongest lines forward while preserving the gradual changes within the perforated surface. The photograph can be read as an abstract arrangement from a distance, then examined as a specific architectural space. For me, that movement between pattern and place is what makes the image interesting: the same view offering both an immediate structure and finer details to follow.
