Romanian Stone Stairway Wall Art in Deep Shadow
Worn Steps Rise Between Graffiti-Marked Walls Towards the Light
The light at the top of these steps is what gives the passage its depth. I found this enclosed stairway in Romania and photographed it in black and white, keeping the nearest paving and dark walls inside the square frame. The steps climb towards a small brighter area, but the route beyond remains partly hidden.
I was drawn to the surfaces as much as the path. Graffiti and scratches cover the plaster, while worn patches reveal rougher layers underneath. Near the upper landing, exposed brick and a small opening interrupt the wall. I wanted those ordinary marks to stay visible rather than smoothing the scene into a general image of old architecture.
The steps have an uneven rhythm. Their horizontal edges lead upward, narrowing with distance and changing direction near the top. Overhead, the low ceiling makes the passage feel enclosed; its angles echo the turn of the stairs. The brighter wall beyond the nearest shadow gives the eye a destination without fully explaining where the stairway goes.
Monochrome brings the texture and tonal changes together, from the dark foreground to the lighter landing. This print would suit someone drawn to weathered urban spaces and architectural details with a quieter mood. For me, the photograph’s interest is in that partial view: enough light to reveal the worn surfaces, enough shadow to keep the passage’s depth and the next turn uncertain.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
