Serengeti Baobab Tree Black and White Photography
A Weathered Trunk Beneath a Tangle of Bare Branches
So much weight below, so much movement above. That contrast drew me to this baobab on the Serengeti plain in Tanzania: a thick, weathered trunk holding up a canopy of branches that seems to spread in every direction. In black and white, the tree becomes a study of solid mass and delicate lines.
I photographed it while travelling through the Serengeti during the dry season. The low mound lifts the trunk just above the surrounding grassland, giving the tree a strong presence without needing a dramatic background. A pale sky separates the fine outer twigs from one another, while the darker ground keeps the composition anchored.
What interests me most is the transition from trunk to canopy. Deep folds and uneven surfaces give the lower part of the tree a dense, sculptural quality. Higher up, heavy limbs divide into smaller branches until the whole crown becomes an intricate web. The eye can follow those lines outward, then return to the broad trunk at the centre.
I kept enough of the open land in the frame to show the baobab in its setting. Low scrub and a smaller tree at the left offer a sense of scale, but they remain secondary. The photograph carries the stillness I remember from that encounter: one imposing tree, dry grass beneath it, and room around it to appreciate its shape.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
