Two Serengeti Cheetahs Black and White Wildlife Photography
One Standing Cat and One Resting Low in Grass
Two cheetahs share this quiet moment in Tanzania’s Serengeti: one stands with its body across the frame, while the other lies low in the grass beneath it. I photographed them in black and white, keeping their faces and spotted coats clear against a softer grassland background. There is no chase in the image, just two animals holding different positions within the same view.
The standing cheetah’s head is turned toward the camera, with dark markings running down from its eyes. Its long tail drops near the left edge, showing a different pattern from the smaller spots across its body. Below, the resting animal’s face appears between the legs of the one above it. That arrangement gives the photograph two distinct points of attention without separating the animals into different scenes.
I waited in the field for a moment worth keeping, and this quieter view held my interest. The grass partly obscures the lower cheetah, while the standing animal’s outline remains more open. In monochrome, their spots connect visually with the small dark shapes among the stems, but their faces stay easy to find. What I wanted to preserve was the close relationship of forms within the frame: two visible faces, different postures and a shared patch of Serengeti grass.
