A Small Herd Beneath the Wide Icelandic Sky
The horses are small within this Icelandic landscape, scattered across a low ridge beneath a broad, muted sky. I photographed the herd during my travels through Iceland, keeping the surrounding ground and distant mist as important parts of the view. Brown, black, and pale coats stand out gently against the mossy earth rather than becoming bold foreground subjects.
What drew me to the scene was its scale. The ridge rises only a little above the plain, but the open land around it makes the herd feel isolated within a much larger setting. Some horses graze with their heads down; others stand along the crest or gather in loose groups. Their different positions give the hillside a quiet rhythm.
The light is soft enough to bring the colors together. Gold-brown ground fills the foreground, while the more distant hills fade into grey. There is no hard patch of sunlight to direct the eye, so the horses become natural points of attention across the rise. I like how their shapes remain readable without losing the calm, understated quality of the landscape.
The wide composition leaves room above and around the herd. That space carries much of the feeling I remember from standing there in the wind: open ground, changing weather, and life moving at its own pace. For someone drawn to horses or Iceland’s rural landscapes, this photograph offers both in balance. It is a view of the animals within their surroundings, with the earth tones and low cloud holding the scene together.
