Two Bridge Towers Beneath a Wide Sweep of Clouds
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge runs across this Charleston photograph as a thin, steady line between water and sky. Its two main towers rise above the span, with faint reflections extending into the calm Cooper River below. I kept a wide view so the bridge could sit within the South Carolina landscape rather than fill the frame by itself.
The sky has as much character as the structure. Broad white cloud streaks sweep across blue, with more closely gathered clouds near the horizon. Their soft forms contrast with the bridge’s straight deck and narrow supports. I like how the towers interrupt that open space just enough to make the landmark clear without taking away the sense of scale around it.
Below, the water reflects both the pale clouds and cooler blue areas. Small ripples give the foreground texture, while the surface becomes smoother-looking toward the bridge. The towers’ reflections provide quiet vertical lines within those broader horizontal bands. Along the distant shore, a low strip of green connects the structure to the land. I wanted the photograph to preserve that balance of engineering and open space: the long span, two carefully defined towers, changing clouds, and water carrying their light. The result is a Charleston landmark view whose atmosphere comes from the setting as much as the bridge itself, inviting the eye to move across the frame at the same measured pace as the river surface.
