Grass Covered Cliffs Above a Sheltered Northern Irish Cove
Green slopes meet steep rock and pale turquoise water in this photograph from Ballintoy, County Antrim. I chose a vertical view of the Northern Irish coast, letting the cliff rise from the small cove to the dark cloud above. The color is central to the image: bright grass on top, weathered stone beneath, and clear water gathered around the rocks below.
The cliff has several different faces within the frame. Some surfaces rise almost straight from the water, while others fold inward into shaded recesses. I like the way the grass follows those changes, covering the gentler slopes and leaving the steepest rock exposed. The coastline’s shape becomes easy to read through that contrast.
At the bottom, darker rocks are visible through the green-blue water. Their submerged forms add depth to the cove, while the cliff casts a heavier shadow along the right. The water is much softer in texture than the craggy wall above it, giving the photograph a quieter lower edge.
I kept the sky to a narrow strip because the meeting of land and water was what held my attention. The cloud still provides atmosphere, but it does not take over the view. For someone who enjoys Northern Ireland’s coastline, this photograph offers a close encounter with its green headlands and rocky shores. The composition leads upward from the water through the cliff, then back down along its irregular edges. It is that compact range of color, texture, and height that makes this corner of Ballintoy memorable to me.
