Dark Rock Shelves Divide Smooth Water From Distant Mountains
The smooth water gives these rock formations a heavier presence. At Kostbergan Beach in Norway, I framed the layered shoreline close to the camera, with a separate boulder farther out and mountains extending across the background. The restrained green and grey tones keep the photograph focused on texture, shape and the space between those layers.
The foreground water is soft enough to suggest reflection without showing a crisp mirror of the sky. Behind it, the low rock shelves have deeply ridged surfaces and dark edges. I like how sharply those textures register beside the gentler water. The rocks create a firm horizontal division, but their uneven outlines keep it from becoming a simple straight line.
Farther back, pale surf surrounds the isolated boulder, while the mountain range becomes softer toward the left. The steeper slope at the right still shows small patches of snow. Above, broad cloud shapes fill the sky, giving the photograph another layer of softness without hiding the coast altogether.
I wanted the view to move from the close rock surface toward that more distant, less definite landscape. It holds several different scales at once: fine grooves in the shore, a substantial boulder and a much larger mountain line. What keeps bringing me back is the contrast between solid forms and surfaces that seem to loosen around them. The water leaves the rocks clear enough to study, while the cloud gives the scene its restrained atmosphere.
