Martha’s Vineyard Beach Boulder Black and White Seascape Print
White Surf Curves Around Dark Rock on an Open Shore
A single dark boulder interrupts the open sand in this Martha’s Vineyard beach photograph. White surf passes behind it and spreads around its base, leaving a thin curved edge on the shore. Above the water, scattered clouds become less distinct toward a hazy horizon. The black and white tones keep the scene’s few strong shapes easy to follow.
I’m drawn to the rock’s angular outline and its place within the moving water. Its upper surface catches some light, while the face toward the camera remains darker. Around it, the foam forms a much softer shape. Farther right, a wave lifts before reaching the beach; closer in, the water leaves only a light line on the wet sand. That change gives the photograph its rhythm. The boulder feels settled, but the shoreline is caught in a moment that will soon look different. I like how the large areas of sky and sand leave room around this small encounter between rock and sea.
I made the photograph in 2009 on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. It may suit a bedroom, coastal living room or a space where a quiet seascape can hold the wall. Someone who enjoys island beaches, monochrome ocean photographs or natural subjects with a simple arrangement may find it appealing. For me, its character comes from the contrast between the rough rock and the thin water moving over the sand. There is enough detail to notice, without losing the sense of an open shore.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
