Palm Shapes and a Triangular Sign Above Calm Reflections
A small island rests low on the horizon, its palms and other trees gathered into a dark cluster above the water. To the right, a channel marker stands apart from it, carrying the number 18 within a triangular sign. I photographed this early morning scene on Florida’s Gulf Coast in 2007. The simple relationship between island, marker and open water gives the coastal view a quiet, distinctive structure.
Large soft clouds gather above the island, leaving a broad pale area between sky and shoreline. I like how the low land holds the composition near the middle while the clouds provide a much larger shape above it. The marker introduces a different kind of form: narrow, upright and sharply outlined, with its triangle clearly separated from the trees behind. That contrast between natural growth and a practical navigation sign is central to the image.
Reflections extend from both the island and the post into lightly rippled water. The marker’s darker reflection breaks into small horizontal sections, while the island produces a wider, softer band. Black and white brings those variations into a restrained range of tones, keeping attention on shape, spacing and the surface of the water. As a print, the photograph offers a calm Florida seascape with a clear graphic accent. It can sit comfortably with other coastal photographs or provide a quieter focal point in a room shaped by pale colours and natural materials.
