Sunlit Plaster Frames A Distant View Of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty appears small beyond the window of an abandoned room at Ellis Island Hospital. I photographed this interior in 2019, with sunlight falling across damaged plaster and the blue harbour visible outside. The colour image brings two very different spaces together: a worn room close at hand and an open view beyond it.

The light gives the scene its structure. Window shaped patches cross the walls, revealing peeling layers and exposed surfaces that might otherwise disappear into shadow. On the right, a brighter area draws attention to the uneven plaster. I like how the sunlight makes these textures readable without softening the room’s condition.

A radiator sits below the arched window, while a hanging light and exposed ceiling details remain overhead. Across the floor, loose boards, debris, and a coil of cable create a more irregular pattern. The window becomes a clear point of orientation among all those fragments. Its dark frame contains water, sky, and the distant statue in a relatively small part of the photograph.

That relationship was what I wanted to preserve. For me, the view carries the significance of Ellis Island’s immigrant setting without requiring an imagined account of a particular patient. The photograph lets the visible room and the distant landmark speak together. It is suited to a space where architectural interiors, abandoned places, and New York imagery can invite thought as well as close attention to light and texture.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
