Stone Arched Corridor Black and White Architecture Print
Repeating Arches, Hanging Lanterns and a Chequered Floor
One arch follows another until the corridor narrows into shadow. In this black and white architectural photograph, stone vaults, hanging lanterns and a chequered floor create a strong sense of depth. I was drawn to the way the passage gives the eye a clear route while leaving plenty of small details along the way.
Statues stand on plinths along the left side, their draped figures breaking up the repeated stone supports. The nearest figure is easy to distinguish; those further away gradually become part of the corridor’s pattern. On the right, light enters between the arches and reaches across the floor, where pale and dark squares form their own shifting rhythm.
I photographed this view in 2008. The lanterns bring a second line through the centre of the scene, their lit bulbs standing out against the soft greys of the ceiling. I like how the curved stonework and the straight edges of the floor work together. They lead toward the same distant doorway, but each does it in a different way.
This print can give a hallway, study or living room a quiet architectural presence. Its monochrome palette suits a space where texture and pattern matter more than colour, and it can appeal to someone who enjoys old interiors or carefully observed buildings. For me, the picture is about looking along a passage and noticing how every repeated element changes a little as it recedes.
