An Oversized Insect Carries a Figure Against the Sky
Being carried away by mosquitoes takes a very literal form here. A giant metal insect spreads its wings above a human figure, with a fork and knife adding to the joke. I photographed this playful sculpture in Ontario, Canada, in 2021, keeping it against the open sky so its improbable shape would remain easy to read.
The broad wings stretch almost horizontally across the view, while the figure hangs beneath the insect’s body. Thin metal lines define the wings, legs, and supporting structure, giving the sculpture an open rather than solid form. Clouds remain visible through parts of it. In black and white, those dark outlines stand apart from the brighter sky, making the details clearer without introducing competing colours. The upright post beneath the figure also gives the image a strong central axis.
I like how the scene combines a familiar outdoor nuisance with such an exaggerated idea. The photograph leaves enough space around the sculpture for the humour to register immediately, then invites a closer look at its smaller parts. This print offers an unusual Ontario subject for someone who enjoys quirky sculptures, Canadian humour, or travel photographs with a lighter mood. It could bring a playful touch to a cottage or casual room, with the monochrome palette keeping the composition simple even though the subject is anything but ordinary.
