Some landscapes feel quiet the moment I arrive. Not silent in the literal sense, but quiet in the way the land carries itself. Iceland has that quality in abundance. Wide stretches of open ground, muted colours, and a sky that never quite settles. On this particular day, I found myself standing in the middle of a vast, windswept plain with nothing but mossy terrain, distant hills fading into mist, and a small herd of horses scattered across a low ridge.

The horses weren’t arranged in any neat pattern. They wandered slowly across the rise, grazing through thick patches of tundra grass and moving in loose clusters. Browns, blacks, and pale coats stood out against the subdued earth tones of the landscape. From a distance, the group felt almost like moving brushstrokes across the hillside—organic, unscripted, and completely at home in the environment.

What struck me immediately was the sense of scale. The ridge itself is modest, barely rising above the surrounding plain, yet with the fog drifting across the distant hills, it felt monumental. The horses became anchors within that space, giving the scene life and rhythm. Their presence adds a natural narrative to the photograph—quiet movement in a landscape that otherwise feels ancient and untouched.

I photographed this scene on location during my travels through Iceland. Out there, the weather changes constantly, and the light is rarely as dramatic as many photographers expect. Instead, it’s subtle. Soft, diffused skies and gentle shadows create an atmosphere that feels almost painterly. Those conditions allowed the colours of the land and the horses themselves to blend in a calm, understated way.
