Wide Clouds Above a Weathered Building With Painted Numbers
This small abandoned building stood alone in a Saskatchewan field, surrounded by grasses and a low, open horizon. I photographed it in black and white with plenty of sky above the roof. The setting was as important to me as the shack: there was very little nearby to compete with its worn boards and compact shape.
Large painted numbers stretch across the front wall, adding a different kind of mark to the weathering. The wood has a rough, broken texture, while the paint cuts over it in broader strokes. A dark opening near the base interrupts the front, and the side wall falls into more shadow as it turns away from the camera.
I kept the roof and chimney clear against the sky. Missing and uneven sections along the roof make its edge less regular, but the building still has a simple outline. Around the bottom, the grass hides part of the structure and continues into the field beyond. That soft boundary makes the shack feel closely tied to the ground around it.
The clouds give the photograph a second scale to follow. Their broad shapes and fine streaks take up much more space than the building, while the grass adds a dense pattern below. I wanted the view to keep that contrast: a small, heavily marked structure within an expansive prairie setting. It was the relationship between the worn wall and all that surrounding space that held my attention.
