Vintage Television in an Abandoned Saskatchewan Farmhouse | Photograph

An Old Television and Upright Chair Among Exposed Wooden Walls

The television still seems to hold the room. Its rounded screen faces outward beside an upright wooden chair, surrounded by fallen plaster, loose boards and walls stripped back to their lath. I found this abandoned farmhouse in the Saskatchewan prairie and photographed its interior in 2021. The scene stopped me because it felt so ordinary despite the extent of the decay.

I have photographed many abandoned buildings, but this room stayed with me. A doorway opens into another damaged space, where a bright window draws the eye beyond the darker foreground. Cabinet pieces and timber interrupt that passage. Close to the camera, the television and chair retain their familiar shapes even as the surfaces around them have broken apart.

The contrast between those objects and their surroundings is what I wanted to keep. I do not need to know the television’s make or imagine the people who watched it to recognise its place in a home. The chair still stands; the walls still define a room. Those simple facts give the photograph its uneasy sense of continuity.

I chose black and white because the image depends on texture and light. Pale plaster fragments, weathered timber, the smooth screen and the darkness between the laths all remain distinct within the monochrome tones.

For someone drawn to abandoned architecture and vintage interiors, this photograph offers a close, detailed view of a prairie home as I encountered it. My attention keeps returning to that blank screen, an intact shape amid the scattered material on the floor.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
