Monument Valley Sandstone in Warm Sunset Light Colour Photography
Rounded Desert Rock Below a Broad Mesa
Every time I visit Monument Valley, I find myself drawn back to the scale and shape of the landscape. In this photograph, the smaller rounded rock in front was as important to me as the broad mesa beyond it. Warm sunset light reaches across both, bringing out orange tones in the stone and leaving darker stretches of desert between them.
The foreground rock rises in a soft curve. Its surface carries fine lines and rougher patches, and the light is strongest along its upper right side. I like how that curve differs from the much more level top of the mesa. One form feels close enough to study in detail; the other spans a large part of the distant view.
Beyond the mesa, a smaller isolated formation stands against the pale horizon. The surrounding land is darker there, allowing its outline to remain clear. Above it, the open sky shifts from a warm band near the ground to cooler blue higher in the frame. I kept the sky simple so those changes in the land could hold the photograph together.
What stays with me is the way the light connects all these separate surfaces. The rough ground nearest the camera, the rounded rock and the distant cliffs each catch it differently. This view preserves a particular evening’s colours, but it also carries what continues to bring me back: space, substantial rock forms and the pleasure of looking closely at a place whose larger outlines are already familiar.
