A Bright Opening Between Sweeping Sandstone Walls
A pale opening cuts between two closely folded walls inside Antelope Canyon. Fine sandstone bands sweep down the rock, bending around smooth ridges and slipping into deep shadow. This black and white photograph is an intimate view of the canyon, with the wider Arizona landscape left outside the frame.
Standing within the narrow space, I found my attention settling on the light rather than a single rock formation. It reveals a bright upper surface and then travels along a series of curves below. The wall on the left remains darker, setting off the more illuminated folds opposite it. That contrast makes the passage feel deep without needing to show its full length.
I like the way the fine striations describe every change in shape. They resemble grain running through a carved surface, yet their direction is continually interrupted by the canyon’s contours. Near the centre, a rounded sandstone shoulder catches the light before dropping into shadow beneath. It gives the eye a place to pause within the flowing pattern.
I photographed this scene in 2007. Choosing monochrome brings the structure of the walls forward, allowing light and texture to carry the view. For a collector drawn to natural abstraction or the American Southwest, the image offers a sculptural study grounded in an actual place. It holds the close, concentrated feeling of looking upward between canyon walls and noticing how much a narrow opening can reveal.
