Tall Masts Rise Above Toronto Island’s Quiet Marina
The masts make fine vertical lines against a warm evening sky at Toronto Island marina. I photographed the boats from across the water, keeping their reflections and the tree-lined shore beneath the clouds. This colour nautical view shows the quieter side of Toronto’s waterfront.
I like the way the boats stay low while their masts reach well into the sky. The hulls and dock form a steady horizontal band, and the trees behind them give the pale vessels a darker background. Small ripples break the reflections into softer shapes near the bottom of the frame.
The clouds are long and fairly low, adding another set of horizontal lines above the marina. Their darker edges keep the warm sky from becoming an empty field. I left plenty of that light in the photograph because it changes the mood of the boats without hiding their detail.
There is a sense of order here, but the different hulls, cabins, and mast heights keep the scene from feeling repetitive. I wanted the photograph to hold those differences within one broad, calm view.
