Bluenose II Bow Detail Black and White Nautical Print
A Draped Chain Crosses the Schooner’s Painted Name
I’ve spent many hours wandering Lunenburg’s working waterfront, and the details of Bluenose II keep drawing me back. This black and white photograph came from a close look at the bow, where a draped chain crosses the painted name and the rigging gathers above it. The view is about the schooner’s material character rather than its full outline on the water.
The white rail creates a broad light band over the darker hull. Below it, the lettering remains clear even where the chain cuts diagonally across the frame. Fine horizontal seams, marks, and scratches give the timber surface texture, while the larger chain links introduce a different scale of detail. Above, ropes and hardware form a denser pattern around the spar, with their lighter tones connecting back to the rail.
What caught my attention that morning was the balance of strength and simplicity. The ship’s name is easy to read, but there is enough surrounding detail to make the photograph feel close and physical. I wanted the chain to act as a line through the composition, linking the darker lower section to the busy rigging above. The monochrome treatment brings those surfaces together without losing their differences. For a sailing enthusiast or someone with a connection to Nova Scotia, this print offers an intimate view of a familiar vessel. It keeps the focus on the small details I notice when I slow down beside the schooner, rather than trying to tell its entire story in one image.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
