A Small Flock Beneath Pale Trees on a Sloping Pasture
The sheep occupy only a small part of this Romanian hillside photograph. Gathered near a wooden fence, they stand on a diagonal band of pasture beneath a much larger spread of pale trees. I photographed the scene in 2011, using black and white to connect the flock with the delicate branches and softly receding countryside.
The composition begins with the slope. It falls from the left towards the lower right, giving the quiet scene a clear direction even though the animals remain close together. Their rounded bodies form a compact group against the fine, scattered texture of the trees. That difference in scale is what holds my attention: a few substantial shapes within a much broader pattern of slender trunks and small branches.
Beyond the nearest trees, the land becomes lighter and less distinct. A small house appears high on the far slope, almost absorbed into the soft tones around it. I have kept that distant detail in the frame because it adds another measure of scale without taking attention away from the flock. The photograph can be read as a simple animal scene, then explored as a layered rural landscape.
Monochrome gives this view a gentle, restrained presence. There is no strong colour contrast to separate the sheep from their surroundings; instead, the eye finds them through shape and texture. For me, the appeal is in that quiet discovery, moving across the open pasture to the flock and then upward through the trees towards the far hillside.
