Rome Handwritten Graffiti on Warm Plaster Colour Street Photography
Names And Drawn Hearts Fill An Overlapping Wall Surface
Handwritten messages, names and drawings cover this warm coloured wall in Rome. Large dark marks cross much smaller notes, with red, green and blue lines appearing throughout the frame. I photographed the detail in 2010, bringing the dense layers close enough for the writing to become both subject matter and visual texture.
Different scales of lettering compete for space. Some words are broad and heavy, while others are tiny, closely spaced lines tucked between drawings. Hearts and rounded outlines add another kind of shape, often overlapping earlier marks. I find the mixture absorbing because there is no single way to move through it. The eye can follow a large diagonal, pause at a brighter patch of colour, then notice finer writing that was easy to miss at first.
The plaster provides a relatively even ochre background, allowing the many colours and dark strokes to remain distinct. The photograph fills the frame with the wall itself, giving the lettering an almost continuous pattern from edge to edge. Small areas of clear surface help separate some marks, but most parts carry several layers of detail. My interest is in how these individual gestures accumulate into a shared urban surface. As a print, the image brings a vivid piece of Rome’s street texture into a room, offering warm colour, varied linework and enough complexity to reward repeated viewing.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
