Gothic Landmark Rising Above Brasov's Old Town Rooftops
From this elevated view over Brasov, the church immediately dominates the city. Its massive stone walls and tall clock tower rise above a dense layer of tiled rooftops, while the forested mountain behind it compresses the scene and gives the architecture even more weight.
I photographed this view in 2011. What holds my attention is the relationship between the Black Church and everything surrounding it. The building is monumental, but it is not isolated. Roofs, chimneys, trees, narrow gaps between houses, and the steep hillside all crowd into the frame, creating the feeling of a city built in layers over a long period of time.
The subdued light is important here. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.
The Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. For me, that sense of scale and setting is what makes the photograph work.
