A Steady Gaze Between Antlers And A Broad Hat
I photographed this boy while spending time with a rural Romanian family living in the mountains. His direct gaze held my attention beneath a broad dark hat. The handmade clothing belonged to the family, and its detailed pattern became an important part of the black and white portrait.
I like how the antlers create a frame within the frame. One rises beside his face, while another shape enters diagonally across the foreground. They give depth between the boy and the wooden interior, keeping the view close without making it a simple head-and-shoulders portrait.
His face has a smoother surface than the materials around it. Hat, patterned collar, textured clothing, antlers and wood each bring a different scale of detail. The darker brim provides a clear upper boundary, while the lighter face remains the point the eye returns to.
I wanted those surrounding forms to contribute without taking attention away from his eyes. Black and white brings the textures into a restrained range of tones and keeps the gaze immediate. The photograph remains tied to time spent with that family, rather than becoming an anonymous portrait in traditional dress. For me, its character comes from the boy’s particular expression held among the handmade fabric and rustic surfaces around him, with the antlers adding an unusual structure to the encounter.
