Scratched Names and Lines Across Red and Blue-Grey Paint
At Voronet Monastery in Romania, I photographed a small section of painted wall covered with etched marks. Red and blue-grey forms remain visible beneath a dense web of pale scratches, lettering, and worn patches. The close view brings those overlapping surfaces forward, showing both the painted design and the marks that interrupt it.
A narrow red band divides the composition horizontally. Above it, curved painted shapes and darker outlines form a more flowing pattern; below, rectangular sections give the wall a steadier structure. The scratches cross both areas, with some fine enough to resemble threads and others broad enough to stand out immediately. I like how the underlying arrangement remains readable even where the surface has become crowded with lines.
The worn paint creates further changes in tone. Pale areas open across the centre and lower left, while stronger red sections hold the upper part of the frame. A darker panel on the right adds weight to the lower edge. Together, those differences make the photograph more than a record of individual inscriptions: they give the whole surface a distinct rhythm of colour and texture. I wanted to preserve that layered view as I encountered it in 2011. The image offers a close look at a particular wall within the monastery, where painted forms, scratched words, and visible wear all share the same space and remain part of what the camera can show.
