Highland Cow Portrait Campulung Moldovenesc | Limited Edition of 10
Direct Gaze Of A Romanian Highland Cow
There is a certain stillness in the Romanian countryside that feels older than the road that brought me there. This portrait was made just outside Câmpulung Moldovenesc, where the hills begin to rise gently into the Carpathians and the farms are stitched together by memory more than infrastructure. I had been walking through open pastureland when this highland cow stepped forward—slowly, deliberately—and looked straight into the lens with a calm that felt almost confrontational in its quietness.
The horns stretch outward in a subtle arc, worn and matte with age. The fur along the ears carries that thick, uneven texture you only find in animals that live year-round outdoors. There’s a softness to the muzzle, but the eyes hold something entirely different—alert, assessing, curious. In monochrome, every strand of hair along the brow catches the diffused light differently, building contrast not from colour but from tone and form. The shallow depth of field blurs the background farmhouse, leaving only the foreground in focus.
I photographed this on location during my travels through northern Romania, standing in a damp meadow with the smell of hay and earth hanging in the air. Moments like this aren’t arranged—they unfold, often quickly—and I find myself working instinctively, adjusting position and composition in real time as the animal moves or shifts its stance.
Each print is produced using archival pigment inks on professional-grade paper, then personally signed by me and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. It’s a quiet image, but one that holds weight when printed—texture becomes tactile, shadow takes on depth, and the gaze meets yours differently from across a room.
If you’re drawn to expressive animal portraiture with presence and restraint, you may also appreciate my Highland Cow Black And White.
