Closed Wooden Shutters Against Faded Olive Plaster and Stone
A closed window can hold my attention as readily as a sweeping landscape. In this Romanian photograph, made in 2011, teal wooden shutters sit within a pale rectangular surround, set into an olive wall whose uneven surface carries patches of exposed reddish plaster. I kept the view close so those colours and textures could become the subject.
The shutters give the composition a firm centre. Their vertical boards, horizontal braces and small pale hinges create an orderly shape against the much less regular wall. The turquoise paint has weathered into different shades, with darker seams between the boards and faint marks across the wood. Around it, the broad light frame provides a pause before the eye returns to the mottled plaster.
I am drawn to how little needs to happen in a scene like this. There is no open view through the window and no person to explain the setting. Instead, the photograph asks us to look at the surface itself: the rough lower stonework, the loose marks to the left and the areas where one layer of colour gives way to another. Those details keep the image from becoming a simple study of matching greens.
As wall art, this colour photograph brings a restrained teal and olive palette with the irregular detail of a real Romanian facade. From a distance, the shutters form a clear geometric focal point; closer inspection reveals the worn paint and small differences that made me stop and look.
