An Empty Cobbled Lane Between Tall Windows and Worn Facades
Cobblestones fill the foreground before the street narrows between rows of old facades. This black and white photograph of Brasov, Romania, holds that long view without traffic or a crowd competing for attention. I made it in 2011, drawn to the quiet presence of an ordinary street rather than a single celebrated building.
On the right, tall upper windows repeat above a lower row of doors, barred openings and small signs. The building line leads towards the centre of the frame, while the opposite facades provide a narrower edge on the left. Overhead, broken cloud brings another texture into the picture. The open sky keeps the close-set architecture from feeling entirely enclosed.
I chose monochrome to give the different surfaces room to speak together. Rough plaster, stone paving, window frames and patches of worn finish sit within one range of grey. The street still has its everyday details, including marks low on the nearest wall, but they become part of the overall rhythm instead of distracting flashes of colour. My eye follows the cobbles towards the distant buildings, then returns to the repeating windows.
There is a grounded, lived-in quality here that I wanted to preserve. The photograph does not need an imagined story about who has passed through; the visible wear and the street’s patient geometry are enough. As architectural wall art, it offers a quiet Romanian city scene with strong perspective and plenty of detail to revisit.
