Two White Casements Open Above Patterned Lace Curtains
Two small white casements open outward from a window in a faded green Romanian wall. I photographed this architectural detail in 2011, drawn to the simple contrast between the pale wooden frame and the mottled plaster surrounding it. The colour is quiet, with soft greens, cream, and traces of reddish paint giving the facade its character.
The window’s divisions provide a clear structure. The upper panes project into space, while the lower sections remain closed, with patterned curtains visible behind the glass. Those layers let the eye move from the wall’s surface to the shallow space of the opening without revealing much of the room inside. I enjoy that balance of openness and privacy.
Around the frame, the wall is far less regular. Worn patches expose older colour, cracks run through the plaster, and a small marked utility box sits to the left. These details give the photograph a particular setting. They also keep the clean geometry of the window from becoming too tidy or abstract.
I left a generous area of wall around the opening because the weathered surface is part of the subject. The square composition holds the window slightly to one side, allowing the surrounding texture to carry equal interest. It is a modest scene of everyday architecture, suited to someone who finds beauty in old windows, restrained colour, and the small details that make a street worth looking at more closely.
