Romanian Athenaeum Architectural Detail Black and White Photography

Carved Cornices and Curved Stone Seen From Below

Looking upward changes the building into a set of intersecting shapes. In this black and white photograph of the Romanian Athenaeum, projecting cornices cut diagonally across the frame while a curved upper section rises behind them. I made the image in 2011, concentrating on a small part of the architecture rather than the whole facade.

The details are intricate, but the composition has a clear structure. Strong edges divide bands of carving, repeated small forms trace the stonework, and a decorative scroll sits near the upper centre. Light catches the projecting surfaces while the recesses hold darker tones. That separation lets the ornament remain legible without flattening it into a pattern.

I like the tension between the curved section and the straighter lines below it. The low viewpoint brings them together in a way a frontal view would not. A narrow area of dark sky leaves the highest stone edge distinct, giving the pale architecture room to stand out.

For me, architectural photography often begins with a detail that changes how I see the larger building. Here, the close framing makes the Athenaeum’s carved surfaces and changing angles the subject in their own right. As wall art, it can suit someone drawn to Romanian architecture, classical ornament or monochrome photography. The neutral palette keeps attention on the craft and geometry, offering a structured image that reveals more as the eye moves through its layers.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
