Snowy Tracks Pass Low Trees and Dark Evergreen Bands
Snow crunching beneath my feet is part of my memory of this Norwegian landscape. I photographed it in 2023, with a pale road passing through low trees toward mountains whose upper edges fade into cloud. The foreground feels close and detailed, while the distant cliffs seem to dissolve into the winter sky. That gradual change in clarity gives the picture its quiet depth.
The road enters from the lower left, bends gently through the centre and narrows as it reaches the woodland farther away. I like how it provides a simple line through an otherwise busy surface. Bare branches make delicate patterns across the snow, rocks break through in small dark patches, and evergreen trees gather into broad bands along the valley. Each layer helps describe the shape of the land.
In black and white, the photograph becomes a study of those differing marks. Faint tracks texture the road, finer branches fill the nearby ground, and larger snow streaks follow the mountain walls. The pale sky brings a softness to the upper part of the image that balances the darker woodland below. I find myself moving back and forth between the road’s inviting curve and the rock faces beyond it.
A horizontal winter scene like this can bring a feeling of open terrain to an interior. It offers enough detail for a close look, while its broad areas of snow keep the overall impression spacious. For someone drawn to northern journeys, woodland and mountains, it preserves the calm of a route disappearing into a snow covered valley.
