Route 66 has a way of holding onto time a little longer than it should. Once essential places—fuel stops, roadside garages, quiet service bays—now exist as pauses in the landscape rather than destinations. I spend a lot of time driving these stretches, not really looking for landmarks so much as for the in-between spaces where history has settled.
This scene came together beneath the overhang of an old service station somewhere along the highway. A pair of Phillips 66 pumps still standing, their paint worn through years of exposure, flanked by a mismatched row of metal chairs that seem to have been dragged in from different decades. Each one is slightly bent or rusted in its own way, resting against a wall that’s absorbed more stories than it will ever give back.
There’s an odd kind of stillness here. The cracked concrete floor. The soft, faded tones of the pumps. The repetition of chair backs lined up as though someone expected company that never quite arrived. Nothing staged or arranged—just the remnants of routine waiting for something that may or may not return.
I photographed this on location during a drive along Route 66, pulling over when the geometry of the space and the colour of the light felt right. These roadside moments don’t last long. A shift in weather or a fresh coat of paint can erase decades in a single afternoon.
