A Hillside Church Rises Above Komin’s Reflected Waterfront Homes
The church draws the eye uphill, but the reflection brings it back to the river. I photographed Komin from the banks of the Neretva in Croatia, with its waterfront homes forming a low band beneath the wooded slope. The black and white view keeps the pale buildings distinct from their darker setting while the water repeats the town in softer vertical lines.
The church stands above the rooftops, its tower giving the hillside a clear point of attention. Below it, houses overlap in different heights and shapes rather than forming a uniform row. Their windows and rooflines become a smaller pattern within the wider scene. The wooded hill remains close behind them, leaving the architecture little empty space around its edges.
I remember the stillness of the river being temporary. A change in light and a rising breeze soon broke the clearer reflections into ripples. This photograph preserves the interval before that happened, when the buildings could be read both above and below the waterfront. The reflected forms are not as precise as the originals, and that difference gives the lower part of the frame its own texture.
What mattered to me was the relationship between town, hillside, and water. None sits apart from the others: homes gather at the river, the church rises behind them, and the reflection connects the built shore to the foreground. It is a view of Komin’s everyday architecture held together by a brief condition of light and calm.
