Lower Manhattan Skyline Photography From the East River

Layered Towers and a Passenger Boat Along the Waterfront

From the East River, Lower Manhattan becomes a series of overlapping building shapes rather than separate street views. I made this black and white photograph with the skyline stretching across a wide frame, keeping the water below and open sky above. A passenger boat near the shore gives the city’s much larger forms a clear sense of scale.

I am drawn to the variety of the rooflines. Rectangular towers and fine window grids sit beside smaller, more elaborate silhouettes, while One World Trade Center rises with its narrow spire farther back. The view does not give every building equal weight. Some facades are bright, others dark, and their overlapping edges carry the eye through several layers of the city.

The waterfront makes a low horizontal line beneath all that height. Piers and shoreline buildings hold it together, with the boat appearing as a small white shape against the darker river. A few clouds gather near the skyline, but most of the upper frame remains simple. I wanted that room around the architecture so its changing outline could be read clearly.

Monochrome lets the differences in surface and light stay distinct without a busy colour palette. As a wide print, the photograph offers a city view that can be taken in from a distance and explored more closely through its window patterns and smaller details. What I like most is the river’s role in the image: it gives me enough separation from the city to see how its many buildings form one connected skyline.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
