Whenever I find myself in a new city, I slow down near the water. Rivers reveal a place in a way streets rarely can—light settles differently, buildings open up in their reflections, and the entire rhythm of urban life becomes something quieter and more honest. That’s exactly what drew me to this evening scene along the river in Chengdu. The city was easing into dusk, that blue hour window when the sky softens but the city lights haven't quite taken over yet. It’s a short moment, but it’s one I always wait for.

This view across the river captures the balance that makes Chengdu such a compelling city to photograph. Modern high-rises rise confidently in the background, their windows glowing in layers of gold and cool blue. These towers speak to the Chengdu that’s rapidly expanding, constantly reshaping itself. But right in front of them, anchoring the composition, is the small riverside pavilion—a traditional architectural touch that hints at Chengdu’s deeper cultural heartbeat. I loved how it grounded the scene. That quiet structure gave the entire skyline something to lean against.

The water that night was almost impossibly still. The reflections were clean and uninterrupted, almost like the city had been mirrored by hand. I’ve learned to never take reflections like this for granted. Wind can ruin them, so can traffic, so can crowds…but here everything settled. The lights from the bridge lamps stretched downward in warm streaks, giving the river a gentle glow. The neon accents from the taller buildings added another layer, a faint shimmer of colour that helped tell the story of a city embracing both heritage and modernity.

Standing there, I felt the calm that only a blue-hour cityscape can offer. The air was cool, the noise softened, and Chengdu seemed to breathe in slow motion. That feeling is what I tried to carry into this print—not just the architecture or the colours, but the stillness that makes a city feel alive in a different way once the sun drops.
