Freight Train Below Rocky Hills Canadian Black and White Landscape Photography
A Long Railway Line Between Hills and Water
The train was easy to overlook within this broad Canadian landscape. I first noticed the layers of exposed hills and scattered trees, with dark water along the bottom of the view. Then the line of freight cars became clear at the base of the slopes. I photographed the scene during my travels in 2021, drawn to the way such a long train could occupy so little of the image and still change how I read the landscape.
The railway follows the water’s edge, making a thin, almost continuous band beneath the hills. Individual cars become small repeating rectangles, some lighter than others, as the line bends across the frame. Above them, rounded slopes carry darker gullies and patches of rock. Trees become denser along the higher ridge, adding a finer texture to the upper part of the land. I kept the sky narrow and allowed the hills to take up most of the composition, so the scale of the train would remain apparent.
Black and white helped me emphasize that difference in scale. The train provides a precise horizontal rhythm, while the terrain has much broader changes in light and shadow. The water adds a quieter foreground beneath both. I wanted the photograph to invite a gradual look, with the railway emerging after the larger forms of the landscape. That is how the scene revealed itself to me: first the hills and water, then a long piece of working infrastructure threaded along their edge.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
