Open Steel Curves Against Water Mountains and Icelandic Sky

I walked around the Sun Voyager on Reykjavik’s waterfront, watching the light shift across its open metal curves. From this angle, the sculpture rises against the water and distant mountains, with plenty of sky visible between its ribs. I spent time finding a view that gave the forms clear separation without flattening them into a single outline. The wind came off the water, and the changing clouds kept altering the background as I worked.

The taller upright pieces reach into the sky, while lower curves sweep outward across a circular paved base. Sunlight catches narrow metal edges and leaves other surfaces darker, revealing the depth of the structure. Its shadows repeat some of those forms across the paving. Behind it, small waves create a dense horizontal texture, and mountains form a lower, darker band beneath the clouds. I liked how the sculpture could remain the clear subject while still allowing the waterfront to pass through its open shape.

Black and white emphasises that relationship between solid metal and the spaces around it. The bright clouds help separate the upper curves, while the darker water gives the base a different backdrop. I made the photograph during my time in Reykjavik in 2022, taking the composition slowly as the light changed. What stays with me is the sense of direction in the structure: the sweeping lines suggest movement even though the sculpture stands firmly on the shore. The picture holds that form within its particular coastal setting.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
