Hallgrimskirkja Church Reykjavik Black and White Architecture Print
Stepped Concrete Ribs Rise Toward the Clock and Cross
Hallgrimskirkja’s facade has a clear rhythm when seen from below. In this black and white photograph from Reykjavik, Iceland, stepped concrete ribs climb toward a clock tower and a small cross against the dark sky. I was drawn to the church’s strong outline and the way its repeated forms bring the eye toward the centre.
The lowest visible window is tall and pointed, with a fine pattern inside it. Above, a line of narrow openings leads toward the clock. The tower’s crown introduces smaller, more intricate shapes, breaking the simplicity of the large surfaces below. I like that progression: broad structure first, then details that become more apparent as you look upward.
Light gives the facade another layer. The left side reveals more of the concrete’s surface, while deeper shade falls between the ribs on the right. The monochrome treatment makes those differences easy to follow. Against the plain sky, the building’s edge stays crisp, and there is little to interrupt its shape.
I photographed this view in 2022 during my time in Iceland. As architectural wall art, it can bring a defined, sculptural presence to a study, office or living room. It may appeal to someone who knows Reykjavik or enjoys modern church architecture. For me, the strength of this image is the relationship between the repeated concrete forms and the quieter details of the clock, windows and cross.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
