One Anchored Boat Between Dawn and Its Reflection
This photograph carries a memory of travelling north with my wife aboard our trawler in 2009. We were making our way along the Intracoastal Waterway, and this quiet morning on the Georgia section stayed with me. A small sailboat rested near the centre of the view, with warm dawn colour behind it and a fine reflection reaching into the water.
The boat is modest in scale beside the open sky. Its mast gives the scene a narrow vertical line, while dark wooded shores stretch in from both sides. A low layer of mist softens the meeting of land and water. Above it, the sky changes gradually from orange near the horizon to deeper blue overhead, and the water repeats those colours in a quieter way.
What I like most is the balance. The sailboat gives the eye a place to settle without interrupting the openness around it. Small ripples add detail to the foreground, but the reflection remains clear enough to connect the boat to the surrounding light. The distant trees supply darker edges around a bright, gentle centre.
