Amsterdam Canal House Reflections Black and White Photography

A Close Row Of Facades Doubled In Dark Water

The canal gives these Amsterdam buildings a second life below the waterline. I photographed from a narrow crossing, where there was little space to move and the angle mattered. The black and white view follows a close row of houses into the distance, with their windows and pale facades repeated in the dark water beneath them.

The nearest building fills the right edge, so the photograph begins with architecture rather than open sky. Farther along, the facades become smaller and more varied. Brick, plaster, window shapes, and rooflines change from one house to the next, while the continuous edge of the canal ties them together.

I was especially drawn to the stillness of the water that morning. It holds the larger outlines clearly, though small changes across the surface soften parts of the reflected windows. I like that the lower half is recognizable without being identical to the buildings above. The darker tones give those repeated shapes a different weight.

The close viewpoint makes this a study of relationships rather than a broad city view. Each narrow facade has its own details, but none stands entirely apart from its neighbours. Looking along the row, then down into the reflection, lets me move through the same architecture in two ways. That quiet doubling was what made me stop at the crossing and stay with the scene.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
